“I wonder what it would be like to live in a world where it was always June.”
L.M. Montgomery
I have a new appreciation for seasonal eating, especially seasonal eating that is reliant on your own growing. I officially have all of my gardens planted and every finger and toe crossed that I did it correctly and will (hopefully) have a bounty of truly seasonal organic food that I grew with my own hands, soon, soon.
Last year I planted a late summer/ early fall garden (we moved in late July) and had minimal success, and yet she persisted! I have hundreds of seeds in the ground and more determination than any human to make it work this year.
Alas, let's get to what's in season this June – currently nothing in my own garden – but professional farmers have us covered.
WHAT'S IN SEASON IN JUNE?
This will depend on the region of the world you live in, naturally. Here in the northeastern United States, we are just starting to see the summer bounty. By the end of the month, we should have plentiful produce.
Look for seasonal asparagus, snow peas, and sugar snap peas. Summer berries will truly start to show off this month. Strawberries are early june, and blueberries and cherries will round out the month.
I still have plenty of rhubarb in my garden, and I am seeing it at markets as well.
Fill your market bags with these seasonal goodies:
- Arugula
- Asparagus
- Beets
- Cucumbers
- Greens – all kinds, swiss chard/ kale, collards
- Lettuces
- Radishes
- Rhubarb
- Sugar Snap Peas
- Spinach
- Strawberries
- Tomatoes
- Fresh herbs
- Garlic scapes (if you can find them)

HEALTHY SEASONAL RECIPES TO MAKE IN JUNE
START YOUR DAY THIS WAY:
I tend to lean into smoothies for breakfast most summer mornings, but for the month of June I'm sharing a few fun ideas to shake things up a bit. Seasonal veggies tossed into eggs with spicy fermented kimchi, a fun earthy matcha cashew butter spread thick on sourdough toast and topped with seasonal berries, and my favorite blueberry thyme scone, sweet and savory and slightly tart – trust me you want to make these!
MAKE A MEAL OF IT!
Summer meals should be light, fresh, exciting, and also easy. There are many summer days when I am perfectly happy with a fresh cucumber salad and a big bowl of cooked greens, or a chilled soup and a hunk of cheese.
EARLY SUMMER SWEET TREATS!
I typically go through a popsicle-making phase each summer, I can't wait to see what inspiration strikes this year! In the meantime try my easy rhubarb yogurt pops, or tart and refreshing hibiscus lime pops.
SEASONAL BIPS AND BOPS
What's better than a simple impromptu dinner made up of really good dips, seasonal produce, and a cheese or two? Trick question. Nothing – nothing is better. Here are some of my favorite bips and bops for the month that you can enjoy as quick snacks or as a part of a bigger meal. Do not sleep on those pickled swiss chard stems! Add them to salads and sandwiches and grain bowls for a real treat.
