During an interview a few years ago Karen, my BFF and co-founder of Nutritious America, was asked if I had any secret food sins. She didn’t skip a beat and said, “Abra love’s mayonnaise”
She was correct. I would, in fact, choose creamy mayo potato salad over chocolate cake any day.
Let’s be honest, mayo isn’t exactly a “health food” but it is a culinary ingredient that I would be sad to live without. After all where would we be as Americans without potato salad!?!?
You may have noticed over the years that I use one particular mayo in my recipes, Vegenaise. I am not vegan but I find this brand to have the cleanest ingredients (NO soy oil or “natural flavorings”) AND the taste, in my opinion, is far superior to traditional mayo. Not kidding! I have converted many clients, colleagues, and friends to vegenaise over the years.
What’s so great about it? Well from a nutritional standpoint I appreciate that Vegenaise is non-GMO verified, and has a short list of ingredients that are recognizable. If you are indeed vegan it’s a great option as it is made without eggs (like traditional mayo). Even Gwyneth Paltrow is a big fan of this product! Although I am not thrilled with the use of soy protein in Vegenaise, I am at least satisfied that it is a non-GMO soy. (Vegenaise also now offers a soy free version if you are really trying to stay away from soy.)
There are a few varieties of vegenaise to choose from, my favorite is the Grapeseed Oil variety. (you can read why I choose grapeseed oil here)
Nothing will ever take the place of homemade mayo or homemade aioli (watch my video for meyer lemon aioli (mayo) here) but when you don’t have the time Vegenaise is the perfect substitute.
Give it a try and tell me what you think!
Here are a few of my favorite recipes using Vegenaise.
For the purpose of absolute clarity in no way do I think Vegenaise is a “health food”, rather I find it to be an enjoyable once in awhile ingredient and a superior product to the majority of mayo’s on the market.
