3 Foods to Keep You Calm AF During the Holidays

December 19, 2012 by Abra Pappa, MS, CNS, LDN Leave a Comment

3 foods to keep you calm AF during the holidaysWhen Holiday Stress Strikes, Strike Back!

Tis the season to be manic, overworked, overbooked, overfed and (get ready for this next one) under nourished.  Sure, the holiday season is full of eating and drinking, and perhaps a bit of over indulging, so one would naturally assume that we are absolutely nourished, right?

Tricky thing is, during the chaos and stress of the season a pesky little hormone called cortisol can wreak havoc on our bodies.   When cortisol is swimming through our systems we tend to eat more, while decreasing nutrient absorption and increasing nutrient excretion.

During the holidays it is just as important to keep stress at bay as it is to keep focused on our exercise and food goals.

Combat that stress by introducing specific nutrients and minerals that can provide a sense of calm and help to keep that pesky hormone, cortisol, out of our holiday season.

Eat these 3 foods to keep your calm and party on!

  1. Eggs – A great source of B12 which is known to reduce stress and increase a sense of calm.  But for the love of Pete, EAT THE YOLK!! over 98% of all the nutrients, vitamins and minerals in an egg reside in the yolk.  Listen up “egg white girls,” get it together.. eat the yolks! (Read this article to learn more about the mighty yolk!: “Cool Chicks Eat the Yolk”)
  2. Pumpkin Seeds – With super high concentration of magnesium, which is known to relax your NERVES and muscles, pumpkin seeds are a great go to snack for holiday calm.  Keep some in your purse and have a handful before you have to go deal with the in-laws.
  3. Tuna – B6 baby its all about the B6.  B6 supports a wide range of activities in the nervous system.  Opt for wild, try this 5 minute Tuna Recipe, Yes, I said 5 minutes, I understand a busy holiday season!  Everything Crusted Tuna
