Ingredients
- Lemon – I prefer using organic lemon in this preparation because the peel will be in contact with heat thus releasing pesticides, fungicides, and herbicides that may be in the conventional peel.
- Fresh Ginger Root – Here is a great tip – If you purchased a ginger root that was excessivley large and you think, what am I going to do with all of this ginger?!? Simply pop it in the freezer, as is, and take out and slice as needed. It will stay fresh in the freezer for up to 2 months. For this recipe I do not recommend any replacement to fresh ginger. Ground ginger will not work here.

How to Make Lemon Ginger Tea from Scratch
Once you learn how easy lemon ginger tea is to make you will never go back to tea bags!
- Boil and Simmer: Essentially you are making what is reffered to as a “decoction” – which is the process of extracting the essence of something. In boiling the ginger and lemon in water for several minutes (at least 10 minutes is my preference) you are extracting the medicinal properties of both the ginger and the lemon peel and infusing the water with flavor and health properties.
- Strain and Savor: Strain the concoction into a mug, adding honey to taste and extra lemon juice if desired.
Ginger Tea Variations:
Optional Add-ins: Adjusting Flavor Enhance your tea experience with optional add-ins that allow you to customize the flavor according to your preferences. Here are a few of my favorites:
- Fresh Mint Leaves
- 1 tsp Ground Turmeric or 1 tbsp Sliced Fresh Turmeric
- 1 cinnamon stick for an earthy warming kick
- Add a tsp of jasmine green tea for a real treat!
Expert Tip
The longer you steep the tea, the more potent the flavor. For a milder taste, reduce the amount of ginger and steep for only 3 minutes.
Can you purchase lemon ginger tea bags? Yes, of course. But there is no comparison in flavor.
The punchy spicy ginger in this tea is proof positive that this tea is worlds beyond a ginger tea bag and is the best way to use up extra ginger!=
Storage and Reheating Instructions
- STORAGE – Tea can be brewed and stored in the fridge for 5 days.
- REHEATING – Reheat over the stove in a medium pot. Alternatively, serve as an iced drink
What to Serve with Ginger Tea
Nothing beats a warming mug of ginger tea to start your day! I recommend sipping while enjoying a gluten-free zesty orange muffin or a blueberry thyme scone. If you are working on improving gut health try adding ginger tea to your breakfast with kimchi egg muffins.
In the evening this is the perfect wind-down beverage that will support digestion, try a mug after a nourishing dinner of Green Curry Salmon.
